Pregnancy and nursing can take their toll on the body, especially the abdominal area and breasts. It can be difficult to get used to the physical changes caused by pregnancy and it’s normal to desire your pre-baby body. Fortunately, Dr. Douglas Grace offers mommy makeover surgery in Burlington to help restore your pre-baby body and improve your confidence.
What Mommy Makeover Can Treat
Mommy makeover involves a combination of procedures that correct aesthetic concerns caused by pregnancy and nursing.
For example, pregnancy causes the abdominal skin to stretch to accommodate a growing belly. Oftentimes, the skin will lose its elasticity and will no longer fit tightly around the stomach after a woman gives birth. In addition, pregnancy may cause the abdominal muscles to weaken or separate. Unfortunately, diet and exercise won’t improve saggy, loose skin or separated abdominal muscles — these concerns must be surgically corrected through abdominoplasty.
Pregnancy and nursing can negatively affect the appearance of the breasts. The skin can stretch and look saggy, and the breasts may lose their natural volume and shape after nursing. The nipples may point downward or look larger than normal.
Your mommy makeover treatment plan will be customized to your individual needs. Depending on the concerns that you have about your body, Dr. Grace may combine abdominoplasty with breast augmentation and/or breast lift.
The specific details of surgery will depend on the procedures that Dr. Grace performs. However, in general, mommy makeover surgery takes several hours and is performed on an outpatient basis (meaning you can return home the night of your procedure). Anesthesia will be used for your comfort.
If your treatment plan includes tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Grace will begin by making a horizontal incision right above the pubic area. This incision will extend from hipbone to hipbone and should be easily concealed with a bathing suit. Through the incision, he will repair separated or weakened abdominal muscles and place internal sutures to hold the muscles into place. Dr. Grace will remove excess fat using liposuction techniques and he may reposition the navel higher on the stomach. He will also excise extra skin and re-drape the remaining skin more tightly along the abdomen. When he’s finished, he will close the incision with sutures and place surgical bandages.
If your treatment plan includes breast lift, Dr. Grace will make the surgical incisions around the areola, continuing vertically down to the crease of the breast and sometimes along the crease. Through the incision, he will remove excess breast skin and reshape the breast mound higher on the chest for a perkier-looking result. If you want your breasts to look fuller and shapelier, Dr. Grace can place saline or silicone breast implants. When he’s finished with breast surgery, he will stitch the incisions closed and dress the area with bandages.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
Everyone’s mommy makeover recovery experience is different, but in general, our patients take about two weeks off from work and their normal routine to rest and relax at home. It’s important to avoid any strenuous activity, including bending and lifting, during the initial recovery. Gentle walking is encouraged to prevent blood clots, especially in the legs.
The breasts and abdomen may be sore, swollen, tender or numb, but these side effects will gradually disappear. Dr. Grace will prescribe oral medication to alleviate any pain. He will also schedule follow-up visits to check the healing progress and advise when it is safe to return to work, exercise and other daily activities.
