Dr. Grace and Dr. Tutino are constantly on the lookout for the next greatest advance in cosmetic surgery. They know that their patients appreciate having multiple options to improve their appearance and enhance their confidence. One of the most exciting recent discoveries is a special type of liposuction technology called Body Jet Lipo, which uses the power of water to remove fat from problem areas. Patients in Burlington and Oakville love this treatment because it is gentler on the body than traditional liposuction while still producing great results.
How Body Jet Lipo Works
Conventional liposuction involves making small incisions in the treatment area and using a hollow tube to loosen fat before it is suctioned or vacuumed from the body. In contrast, Body Jet Lipo water-assisted liposuction involves a less invasive method: using a gentle jet of water to irrigate fat and remove it permanently from the body. Body Jet Lipo may be used to contour multiple areas of the body, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and upper arms.
Advantages of Body Jet Lipo
Body Jet Lipo is preferable to conventional liposuction for the following reasons:
- Less traumatic on the body’s structures (e.g., blood vessels, nerves, surrounding tissues)
- Does not require as much manual pressure to remove fat
- Shorter overall treatment
- Less post-operative pain and bruising
- Local anesthetic can be used
- Minimal downtime
- Rapid recovery
- Excellent and precise results
What to Expect During Treatment
Patients who are leery of general anesthesia will be pleased to learn that Body Jet Lipo can be performed under local anesthesia. If you would prefer not to be awake during your procedure, general anesthesia can be used.
During the procedure, Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will inject a tumescent fluid — which is a mixture of saline, epinephrine and lidocaine — into the treatment area. This fluid helps to reduce discomfort and minimize bleeding. Then, he uses a laminar jet that releases high-pressured water to dislodge fat — separating the fat cells from the surrounding tissues — before aspirating it from the body.
Recovering from Body Jet Lipo
Everyone recovers from Body Jet Lipo differently, but most patients are able to return to work and their normal routine within a few days of the procedure. The treated area may be sore or tender and have mild bruising, but these side effects will quickly subside. Any pain can be managed with prescription medication.
It can take a handful of months to see appreciable results, so don’t worry if the areas you had treated don’t look as slim as you expected at first. As swelling subsides, your new, leaner shape will gradually reveal itself.
Although it’s recommended that patients rest and relax after the procedure, gentle walking is encouraged to prevent the development of blood clots, especially in the legs. Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will follow up with patients to check their healing progress and advise when it is safe to return to daily activities.
In general, Body Jet patients recover more quickly than patients who opt for traditional liposuction. Recovery from Body Jet liposuction generally requires just three to five days, whereas healing from traditional liposuction takes about seven to ten days.
Are the Results of Body Jet Liposuction Permanent?
Most people experience permanent fat loss in treated areas after having Body Jet liposuction. This occurs because liposuction works differently than natural weight loss: When you lose weight via dieting or exercising, fat cells all over your body shrink in size, but they don’t disappear. This leaves you vulnerable to regaining weight in all of the same “problem areas” as soon as you go off your diet.
Surgical and non-surgical fat removal procedures, on the other hand, remove fat cells—so they’re gone forever due to the fact that fat cells almost never grow back on their own. Even if you gain weight after having Body Jet liposuction, the areas your procedure contoured will always be proportionally slimmer than they used to be.
Who Makes a Good Candidate for Body Jet Liposuction?
Most healthy adults can safely have Body Jet liposuction. Before you get started with treatment, however, you may need to make a few lifestyle changes: To ensure a comfortable and complication-free experience, you’ll need to give up tobacco, alcohol, and certain medications (like blood thinners) for about three weeks before and after your procedure. Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will review your medical history and let you what changes, if any, you’ll need to make.
Before having any form of surgical fat removal, candidates must also make sure their expectations are realistic. No plastic surgery procedure can induce full-body weight loss, so if you’re significantly overweight, you’ll need to get close to a normal BMI before you have Body Jet. Like traditional liposuction, Body Jet is used to “spot reduce” stubborn fat deposits that remain even after successful weight loss. If you’re a healthy weight but you still struggle with excess belly fat, love handles, or overly fully thighs or hips, this procedure may be exactly what you’re looking for.
Body Jet liposuction is best suited to patients who have good overall skin elasticity. If you also have loose skin you want to treat, or you’re concerned that having liposuction may create excess skin, you may wish to consider another procedure. The Grace Clinic also offers laser liposuction, which stimulates collagen production and tightens the patient’s skin and connective tissues while fat cells are destroyed. For patients with very severe abdominal skin laxity, we generally recommend abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery).
