SmartLipo and SlimLipo in Burlington – Body Contouring by Dr. Douglas Grace and Dr. Roberto Tutino
Though traditional liposuction is an excellent choice for patients who want to remove the maximum volume of fat quickly, not everyone needs extensive surgery to shed unwanted pounds. SmartLipo and SlimLipo use an innovative process called laser lipolysis to break down stubborn fat, creating slimmer contours with minimal downtime. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Grace was one of the first surgeons in Ontario to offer these revolutionary procedures, and he’s helped numerous patients achieve their cosmetic goals safely and permanently with laser lipolysis.
SmartLipo and SlimLipo: Gentle, Permanent Fat Removal
Smartlipo and SlimLipo are considered the gold standard in laser lipolysis by leaders in the plastic surgery industry. These procedures can be used to remove localized areas of surplus fat that have accumulated because of pregnancy, aging, or genetic factors. Smartlipo and SlimLipo are most effective when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon who understands balance and proportion and can apply these concepts to body sculpting.
Smartlipo and SlimLipo work by liquefying fat in a targeted area, coagulating the tissue and tightening the skin for a slimmer and smoother shape. Because of the special technology used, there is very little bruising and downtime after a Smartlipo or SlimLipo procedure.
Though SmartLipo and SlimLipo are gentle procedures, they’re capable of producing striking results that can last a lifetime. Most patients who have laser liposuction experience a 25% reduction in the size of the areas treated. This usually translates into a one to a three-inch reduction in circumference.
Laser lipolysis systems can be used to contour the abdomen, waist, thighs, hips, chest, back, upper arms, knees, and neck. Laser lipolysis affords Dr. Grace and Dr. Tutino the ultimate precision, accuracy, and consistency when slimming and shaping the body.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Smartlipo or SlimLipo can be performed using general or local anesthesia, depending on your preferences. Some of our patients are leery of general anesthesia, while others prefer to be completely asleep during treatment. Both doctors will talk to you about your options during your initial consultation.
To begin the procedure, Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will insert the thin cannula (about the width of an uncooked strand of angel hair pasta) into the treatment area. The cannula delivers laser energy to heat and melt the fat cells. Once the fat has liquefied, Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino can easily remove the treated cells from the body with gentle suction. When he is satisfied with his work, he will close the incisions with sutures and may place a support garment to help the tissues heal.
Recovering from Your Procedure
Although patients’ recovery experiences from plastic surgery procedures vary depending on the individual, most Smartlipo and SlimLipo patients recover within a day or two of their procedure. They may have minor discomfort (akin to the aches and pains after a hard workout at the gym), but this can be easily alleviated through oral pain medication.
Added Benefits of Smartlipo/SlimLipo
In addition to permanently destroying stubborn fat cells, laser-assisted lipolysis has other benefits. The laser seals blood vessels to reduce bleeding, post-operative bruising and swelling, and recovery time. Also, the heat from the laser promotes collagen growth for tighter, more youthful-looking skin. This is important because aging causes the production of collagen to slow down, which can contribute to skin wrinkling and sagging. Stimulating collagen growth helps the skin look more youthful and toned.
When to Expect Results
Most patients will see results within the first week after having SmartLipo or SlimLipo. However, the body needs time to excrete damaged fat cells and generate new collagen. You can, therefore, expect to experience continued slimming for four to six weeks after treatment. Your skin may improve in firmness and elasticity for two to three months after your last laser lipolysis session.
Most patients only need to have one SmartLipo or SlimLipo session to achieve excellent results. Still, some patients choose to have multiple treatment sessions to lose a significant amount of unwanted fat without conventional liposuction.
How Long do the Results of Laser Lipolysis Last?
In most cases, the results of both SmartLipo and SlimLipo are permanent. The fat that is removed by laser lipolysis won’t grow back, though weight gain and age-related fat centralization can potentially mitigate some of the results of treatments. To ensure you get the most out of laser lipolysis, commit to eating a nutritious, calorie-controlled diet. Strength training may also help to prevent fat centralization.

In addition to permanently destroying stubborn fat cells, laser-assisted lipolysis seals blood vessels to reduce bleeding, post-operative bruising and swelling, and minimize recovery time. The heat from the laser promotes collagen growth for youthful-looking skin. This is important because aging causes the production of collagen to slow, which can contribute to skin wrinkling and sagging. Stimulating collagen growth helps the skin look youthful and toned. Likewise, tightening the skin during fat removal prevents pockets of loose skin from forming in places where the skin has been stretched by excess fat. Dr. Grace and Dr. Tutino can combine laser lipolysis with therapies like Exilis Elite to further enhance skin tone and elasticity without surgery.
Who Makes a Good Candidate for Laser Lipolysis?
The ideal SmartLipo or SlimLipo candidate is a healthy individual with a BMI under 30. Laser lipolysis is intended to selectively remove deposits of diet-resistant fat, not produce whole-body weight loss, so its effectiveness is limited when applied to significantly overweight individuals.
You should avoid having laser lipolysis if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are also unsuitable for patients who have cardiac pacemakers or who have medical implants in or near the treatment area. During your consultation, Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will review your complete medical history to make sure that you can safely have laser lipolysis.
