Some areas of fat stubbornly resist your efforts in the gym and at the dinner table. While not a solution to weight-loss, liposuction offers you a brilliant method to shed remnants of undesirable fat to reveal your fit, attractive figure.
What Is Liposuction?
The second most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S., liposuction is a body sculpting procedure that refines the body’s contours. Last year, over 250,000 Americans opted for liposuction to help them realize the physique they desired.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localized fat deposits from the body. Performed using several different techniques, the goal of all liposuction procedures is the same – to break down and remove unwanted adipose tissue.
When performed by elite board-certified plastic surgeons, such as Dr. Douglas Grace or Dr. Robert Tutino, liposuction is a safe and effective procedure. It is important to note that during liposuction, removing unwanted fat is only one aspect of the surgery. Experienced surgeons will conduct a thorough assessment to ensure your suitability for the operation. Your skin and tissue must adjust to the treatment, to reveal the new contours created after the removal of excess fat.
At The Grace Clinic in Burlington and Oakville, you can rest assured that the artistry and precision of Dr. Grace and Dr. Tutino ensure maximum satisfaction from your fat removal treatment. What Can Liposuction Do for Me?
For men and women, the areas of the physique that are genetically predisposed to fat deposits are different. For men, the common trouble areas are the lower back, lower abdomen, neck, and chest. These regions all respond particularly well to liposuction, and patients generally recover very quickly from the procedure.
For women, fat deposits can be a bit more widespread. Many of our patients in Oakville or Burlington often use liposuction to sculpt the curves and contours of the:
- Abdomen and waist
- Upper arms
- Neck/chin area
Applying liposuction to the upper back combined with the love handles and hips makes a substantial improvement towards achieving the coveted hourglass physique.
Many women particularly love bra roll, upper chest, and armpit fat deposits reduced, as this can also reduce the burden on their shoulders and spinal column. The abdominal region is one of the most commonly treated areas and significantly bolsters confidence when wearing swimsuits or figure-hugging clothing.
A final region where genetics plays a significant role in fat deposits is the thighs, preventing many women from achieving the elusive ‘thigh gap.’ Inner and out thigh liposuction allows women with even the most stubborn fat buildup in these areas to confidently squeeze into a tight pair of jeans.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Liposuction?
The surgeons at The Grace Clinic in Burlington and Oakville stress that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. However, if you are within 30% of your ideal weight and have tight, elastic skin with developed muscle tone, then liposuction can help you further refine your physique.
Our surgeons at The Grace Clinic have found that patients who experience the most satisfaction from liposuction are people who are already relatively fit. Those who understand the benefits of regular exercise and eating healthy, and who are motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle are the best candidates for liposuction.
What are the Different Types of Liposuction?
Liposuction can be performed using various techniques and methods. According to your anatomy, desired results, fitness, and health, the approach recommended to you by Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will yield your optimum results.
Tumescent liposuction is the most common liposuction procedure. During the treatment, a sterile solution is injected into the treatment area, consisting of saltwater (to assist fat removal), an anesthetic (to numb pain) and a substance that constricts blood vessels. A cannula attached to a vacuum is then inserted into the body, which suctions out the fat and fluids. Tumescent liposuction is beneficial in removing large quantities of adipose tissue in a short amount of time. In some circumstances, patients require a more fine-line treatment.
Some patients require smaller quantities of fat removed with more precision. In such cases, The Grace Clinic recommends laser lipolysis liposuction (LAL). In their gold standard Smartlipo and Slimlipo procedures, Dr. Grace and Dr. Tutino apply LAL to subtly and precisely contour the physique.
Using a cannula introduced to the body via an incision, a precise and powerful laser is inserted into the body. This laser uses energy to liquefy adipose tissue and heat the desired area, which stimulates the skin and can improve skin appearance after the treatment. The liquified fat cells are then removed from the body via a suction cannula.

Is Liposuction Painless?
Anesthetics administered during all liposuction procedures provide long-lasting localized effects that reduce post-operative discomfort. According to your circumstances, Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will have outlined and planned your recovery schedule and medication accordingly to offer you the greatest comfort during your recovery.
What Will My Recovery be Like?
After liposuction, patients may have swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area. These side effects will diminish with time. Any post-operative pain is addressed with oral prescription medication. Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions.
Depending on the region of your treatment, Dr. Grace or Dr. Tutino will advise you in choosing a compression garment to wear after the surgery. Compression garments significantly decrease any post-op pain while also speeding recovery. By slightly pressurizing the treated area, compression garments help body tissue reconnect and encourage more distinct contours to form after the surgery.
In general, patients should relax and stay off their feet as much as possible for the first twenty-four hours post-surgery. After the first day, patients should take a slow stroll several times a day to encourage proper circulation. It is essential that any strenuous movement, including bending and lifting, is avoided within the first two to three weeks after the surgery.
Dr. Grace and Dr. Tutino offer exceptional postoperative care. They will meet with you several times after surgery to check on the healing progress and clear you to return to work, school, exercise, and other daily activities.
Liposuction patients need to understand that everyone recovers differently, and there is no rush to return to work or school. Depending on the treatment you received, you may need one to two weeks off work. It will take several months and close attention to healthy eating to see the best possible results from the treatment.
