Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as “tummy tuck,” is a procedure designed to improve the contour of the stomach. Most abdominoplasty candidates have loose skin and fat left over from multiple pregnancies, massive weight loss (i.e., after bariatric surgery) or as a result of the aging process. Other candidates simply want to achieve a slimmer and trimmer waistline and have been unable do so with targeted exercise and dietary measures.
What Does Tummy Tuck Accomplish?
The goal of tummy tuck is to flatten the stomach and create a firmer abdominal profile. Dr. Grace accomplishes this by doing three things:
1.Removing excess skin and fat
2.Tightening the abdominal muscles
3.Repairing sagging skin
There are several types of tummy tuck procedures, including an abbreviated “mini tummy tuck” and extended tummy tuck. The approach Dr. Grace takes depends on the patient’s specific needs and goals. Dr. Grace will assess you at your consultation and discuss the most appropriate option to achieve your goals.
Generally, you will need full tummy tuck surgery if you have separated abdominal muscles and excess abdominal fat/skin above and below the belly button. If your abdominal muscles have not separated, and the excess fat/skin is located mostly below the belly button, you are likely a better candidate for mini tummy tuck surgery.
During traditional tummy tuck surgery in Burlington, Dr. Grace makes a horizontal incision right above the pubic line. He tightens the separated abdominal muscles, which narrows the waistline and removes excess skin (which may have stretch marks) and fat. Depending on the case, Dr. Grace may use liposuction techniques to remove excess fat on the sides (flanks). He may also relocate the belly button to a higher position on the abdomen.

Recovery and Follow-Up
Tummy tuck patients may experience minor discomfort the first few days of their recovery, but this can be controlled with prescription pain medication.
Everyone recovers at a different pace, but it’s important for tummy tuck patients to get as much rest as possible while their body heals. Dr. Grace advises his patients to wear a surgical garment to help the tissues conform to their new contours, and to avoid bending, lifting and straining during the initial recovery. Further instructions will be provided during the consultative phase.
Dr. Grace schedules several follow-up appointments with his tummy tuck patients to check their progress and advise when it is safe to return to work, exercise and other normal activities. You can expect to be seen by Dr. Grace at one week, two weeks, one month, three months and six months postoperatively, or as often as is needed. He is always available to address any concerns his patients may have during their recovery.
