Some areas of fat are stubbornly resistant to diet and exercise, and must be removed via surgical methods. Liposuction is a body sculpting procedure that refines the body’s contours for a more pleasing overall shape. Liposuction should only be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon with an eye for artistry and a precise touch. Patients trust liposuction surgeon Douglas Grace for beautiful, natural-looking results.
What Liposuction Treats
Liposuction eliminates areas of localized fat from the body. It is commonly used to sculpt the curves and contours of the:
- Abdomen and waist
- Upper arms
- Neck/chin area
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Burlington Liposuction candidates should be within 25 pounds of their ideal weight and be diligent about diet and exercise. Dr. Grace has actually found that many of his patients are motivated to maintain their results by regularly exercising and eating well-balanced meals.
Liposuction can be performed using various techniques and methods. Dr. Grace will recommend the approach that he feels will work best on a particular patient based on their anatomy, desired cosmetic outcome and other factors.
Traditional liposuction involves making several small incisions in the treatment area and inserting a thin tube called a cannula. Dr. Grace will move the cannula back and forth to break up the fat and use suction to remove the fat from the body.
Tumescent liposuction improves upon traditional liposuction by incorporating a “wetting” solution to make it easier to break up and remove fat. Dr. Grace will inject the wetting solution into the treatment area before suctioning out the fat cells. The tumescent fluid, which contains a local anesthetic and epinephrine, will firm up the fat and constrict the blood vessels to minimize bleeding and swelling.
Recovery and Aftercare
After liposuction, patients may have swelling, bruising and tenderness in the treated area. These side effects will diminish with time. Any post-operative pain can be controlled with prescription oral medication. Dr. Grace will provide comprehensive aftercare instructions for the patient to follow.
In general, patients should relax and rest for the first few days of their recovery. Gentle walking is encouraged to promote good circulation, but any strenuous movement, including bending and lifting, should be avoided. Dr. Grace will meet with the patient several times after surgery to check on the healing progress and clear the patient to return to work, school, exercise and other daily activities.
It’s important for liposuction patients to understand that everyone recovers differently, and there is no rush to return to work or school. Patients need to listen to their own bodies and move at their own pace.
