What is an
IPL Photofacial?

We all want clear skin, but nature has a way of sabotaging us with imperfections, especially as we age and sun damage accumulates. Fortunately, skin rejuvenation has advanced beyond the painful procedures of the past. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial is a laser light treatment that targets pigment issues, such as brown spots, sun damage and red spots, and Rosacea. The bright light passes through the epidermis, drawing out the pigment-producing cells and dispersing the uneven pigment. IPL Photofacial can be used on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back arms, legs, and just about anywhere else. IPL  is also an effective treatment for broken veins and spider veins.

Photofacial (IPL) Intense Pulsed Light Rejuvenation is one of the top anti-aging and non-invasive treatments to produce healthier, younger, and more evenly toned skin. IPL stimulates collagen production, helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and gives skin a radiant appearance.

Broadband Light (BBL) uses trusted dual-lamp technology, creating new standards for skin treatments related to aging and sun damage. BBL is a non-surgical, affordable, safe treatment with little downtime, discomfort and proven results. Our clinic has been offering BBL treatments for over ten years. It is one of our most popular, affordable treatments and it works. Each treatment is unique to match the personal goals and skin condition of each patient. BBL is used to accurately treat aging, sunspots, facial veins, wrinkles and skin imperfections. Scientific evidence established that regular treatments of BBL would revitalize the appearance of skin and continue to reduce the signs of aging. BBL pulses light over selected areas rejuvenating and softening the appearance of skin.

How Does IPL (Photofacial) Work?

GraceMed uses specialized hand-pieces that filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal and vessel clearance. The hand-pieces emit pulses of light into the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in visible vessels and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrinks the vessels.

Commonly Asked Questions

Do I need a single treatment or multiple treatments?

3-5 treatments are recommended for the best results of IPL, usually one every three to six weeks.  IPL photofacials treatments are effective and achieved with little discomfort and minimal risk.  Single treatments can be done but results will not be as dramatic as when a series is performed.

Does an IPL Photofacial hurt?

GraceMed’s IPL system is equipted with a cooling system so that when the light is pulsed onto a spot on your face, that spot is also immediately chilled.  This really takes the sting out of the procedure.  You may feel some mild discomfort but it is typically less with each treatment.  Treatments usually take about 30-45 minutes and depend on the size of the treated area.

How long will my IPL Photofacial last?

Protecting yourself from the damaging effects of the sun will affect the longevity of your IPL photofacial. If you are exposed to lots of sun after the treatments then underlying issues, whether they are redness or brown spots, will return.  But if you take good care of your skin and keep it protected from the sun then your skin will continue to look good with annual maintenance treatments.

To control and maintain collagen growth, we currently recommend an IPL treatment every 6-12 months.

Are there side effects of and IPL Photofacial?

The more you stay out of the sun before your IPL, the safer the proceedure will be. Side effects are mild and normally temporary, and include  swelling, redness, an accentuation of the brown spots, crusting, and an occasional bruise or small superficial blister.  Serious and rare side effects can occur if you’ve been exposed to the sun prior to the IPL treatment.  If you have dark skin then the IPL may not be the best choice for treatments as the risk for side effects increases in highly pigmented skin.
